The never ending story.. but where does it end?
Where do I start? It's another Word, another read and another release
from the Carnage crew but wait, somethings different! Yep life has
changed for Carnage since we last released an issue of The Word. The
groups crew moved all over the country as courses ended, jobs changed
and over time so did we. We've had to cope with loss of communication,
loss of working together and worse, the loss of a friend.
It was an average day for me at work when I got an email from Wookies
dad. Here it is:
"I note from a recent EMail that you knew my son Ben.
On 8 October we were devastated by the news that Ben had been killed in
a car accident. My wife Roz and two daughters Claire(18)and Amy(17),
along with myself, are struggling to cope at the moment. Ben was 21
years old.
We were delighted when Ben obtained a first class honours degree in July
- a remarkeable achievement.
Ben was a very special person with an exciting and significant future
ahead of him - he will be missed so very, very much by family and
friends.
Wyn Thomas"
I thought it was a joke and phoned up Bens home number where I reached
his dad. After talking to him I realized it was no joke and after
taking a breather I emailed everyone I knew via email that knew Ben and
phoned the rest including ALL members of Carnage and some past members.
"This is David (Kei of Carnage). This email arrived in my inbox today.
Thinking it was some sick joke I phoned Ben`s dad and he has confirmed
that Carnage`s best musician Ben Thomas, known to the crew as Wookie has
died in a tragic car accident. I am upset greatly by this and I expect
those of you that knew him will be too. I met Ben when he came to visit
the crew in Middlesbrough about a year ago and he was a great laugh and
a great person to know. His skills as a musician were so impressive
that I just had to offer him a place in the group before anyone else got
wise to this new talent on the scene. He recently composed a CD of his
music which I believe several of you may of already heard, titled
"Precious".
As a mark of respect, after emailing you this message, I will be
updating the loading screen on the Carnage homepage to reflect our loss.
I will also mention this distressing news in the next issue of The Word
magazine on which Ben`s music has appeared so often. In fact readers of
The Word have said on several occasions that they wished we would
release Ben`s mods to them as they were so good.
Ben`s dad has asked to be included in any further emails about his son
so therefore Ben`s email address is included in this message.
Ben will be missed by more people than any of us have ever met, around
the world.
David aka Kei"
Not long after Iceman posted..
"I never met Ben, however I sent many emails and a few disk sends to
him. I am shocked to hear what has happened, although i never met Ben I
always thought as if I new him, and i pictured in my mind the sort of
person he was from his music.
I`ve always shown a great admiration of music done on the Amiga, and
Ben`s work was definatley some of the best I`ve ever come across. It
came as no surprise to me finding out he got a 1st Honours Degree.
Recently purchasing a PC the first thing I done was transfer his
modules from my Amiga onto my PC. Shit, life can really suck some
times.
There was one thing I always wanted to personally tell Ben, and that was
I thought he should of professionally released his work (maybe he did do
this ?) I think the module "Find The Time" is truley amazing, maybe his
sisters who helped compose this song - could take his work a step
further and release this song - as everyone I`ve let listen to it,
agrees its superb.
Over the years being a member in carnage I`ve always felt proud of
demonstrating Ben`s modules to my non computer literate friends, saying
to them that Ben was a member in the group.
He will be dearly missed, however his work will definately be remembered
and passed on to others by me.
IcEmAN of CARNAGE"
Other messages started pouring in shortly afterwards. We decided to
dedicate this issue to the memory of Ben. We are hoping to release his
modules onto the aminet in the future and maybe the unreleased ones as
well if we get permission.
Carnage is no longer the same as it was. Things have changed quite a
lot and we've had to move with these changes. We've all grown up and
entered the adult world (it sucks by the way), we've all had to get
jobs, pay bills and experience things such as tax, national insurance
and actually working! Oh no! This has caused problems with
communication within the group, especialy with me.
You can read about me in another article in this issue. What I want to
say here is that I've been meaning to quit the Amiga scene for ages but
I had so many friends here that I stayed. It was great to be able to
think of mates half way across the world that you had when you were down
or those just around the corner when you were bored. I've been a part
of this scene for so long now that I am growing tired of it. It's
starting to die and I'm living in nostalgia most of the time.
My computers don't run my life though. I realized long ago that
computers when used properly can augument life rather than becomming a
replacement for it. With the loss of Ben I thought more on this and the
fact that I~ve got great mates here but that the scene should no longer
be an anchor but a spring board. That's why I re-invented Carnage
so-to-speak. The scene has been great to us but we should not say we
are a scene group anymore and keep struggling to release scene warez
when it is obvious to me that our members have become better at what
they do that downgrading their work to fit on a floppy disk based
release is just so stupid in a world full of CDROMs, Hard Drives and
virtual web space.
So Carnage at present are collecting together the thoughts of each
member and are coming up with a new goal. We will still be releasing
The Word but it will be an archive you can install on your Amiga, PC or
whatever you use or you can read it on-line if you wish. From now on we
are going to harvest our members talents to reach new goals, to design
new software concepts in the entertainment fields and to enjoy ourselves
always. Lifes to short to moan about a coder being to slow or graphic
artist not doing any pixel art in months.
Next issue I hope will be completly different rather than the rushed
feel that this issue presents due to lack of time now that I'm working.
I look forward to reading your articles and chatting to you via email
over the coming months and I appreciate any feedback you may give.
